Howdy!
I was fortunate enough to be able to attend the Gary Jaehne suspension seminar at Doc Wong's clinic Saturday night and I found it to be very informative. If another one is offered you should try and attend!
After a short introduction and a recap of Part 1 of the seminar held previously, Gary began a thorough discussion of suspension terminology and construction. He went into considerable detail and used demonstrations and sample suspension components to illustrate the principles he was describing. I came away from this portion of the seminar with a much better understanding of the differences between the methods of shock and fork construction and the effect on performance of these techniques.
Luckily for me, he also presented us with an 18-page handout so that I need not rely solely on my minimal brain capacity to recall the details. Once suspension internals were covered, Gary launched into a description of the effects of inappropriate suspension settings on bike handling. Once we were armed with this information he then was able to describe a step-by-step procedure to properly set up our bike suspension.
Gary and company brought two bikes for us to play with adjustments and feel the effect of these changes. A Honda RS250 and a Honda RS125 were provided and it was a treat to be around such cool machines. (The wee 125 was very nice and tiny weighing 40lbs less than me!) After this session we were much better prepared to set up our bikes in a systematic and effective manner.
It was very generous of Gary and Doc Wong to provide us the opportunity to attend this seminar and I hope that they receive sufficient kudos that they will be motivated to do it again. Thanks guys!
