Doc Wong Ride Topics:
Suspension Basics, 21 February 1998

by Sue

I went to the Basic Suspension Clinic last night that Gary Jeahne did. I found it fairly interesting, and it is always fun to get together with other sportbike riders.

He didn't really have time to get through what he really wanted to cover, but discussed basic terms, setting preloads, and emphasized on how everything is interrelated and the MC and rider must be treated as a whole, and that a change to one thing can affect other things. Doc said they are going to continue it on March 21, the night before their next DocWong ride.

My suspension questions have always been about trying to figure out if the bike is doing 'X', then which 'Y' needs to be changed, but I guess it is not as simple as that.

I was just wondering what other people who attended thought of it, and for those who couldn't make it, what would they hope to learn from such a thing?

(If we get enough good questions, maybe we could get a FAQ page posted on Doc's website).

I found the Suspension Seminar extremely helpful. It is interesting on how everything is so interrelated, and how even the top new sportbikes only come with so-so suspension components from the factory, when the good stuff isn't that much more when producing them 5,000 at a time.

I'm just waiting for a chance to test out all the stuff I learned....
